A beautiful soprano voice filled the candlelit church with the famed Magnificat. The text was Mary’s prayer of worship as she affirmed her faith while carrying the Christ child. Mary sang this song when she was chosen by God to be mother to His Son on earth.
He has looked at me with favor …
The Mighty One has done great things for me …
His mercy is for those who fear him, from generation to generation.
(Luke 1:48-50, NRSV)
Mary recognized God’s favor.
But Mary is not the only favored one!
The words “from generation to generation” means that God’s favor and purpose extends through time to all believers.
Mary’s Prayer of Praise Is Also a Prophecy
Jesus’ mother merely gave voice to what is true for all of us. Men and women from generation to generation have had and will have the blessing of Christ living in them. People like you. Christ’s current dwelling place is in you.
As the first of many who would follow Christ, Mary simply foretold the experience you can share:
- He looks on you with favor.
- He has done great things for you.
- His mercy is on you.
God’s hand of favor now rests on you. You are chosen by God for a special purpose.
Mary recognized God’s hand of favor resting on her. She responded.
Will you?
